How to Check If ChatGPT's References Are Real (and Why AI Invents Them)
AI chatbots produce beautifully formatted references that sometimes do not exist. Here is why it happens, how to spot it, and the two-minute workflow that keeps fabricated citations out of your work.
Why AI invents references at all
Large language models do not look things up; they generate text that is statistically plausible. When you ask for sources, the model produces author names that publish in that area, a title that sounds right, a journal that exists, and a DOI-shaped string — assembled from patterns, not retrieved from a database. The output looks like a citation because that is exactly what the model is optimising for. Whether the paper exists is a separate question the model never checks. Estimates across studies have found fabrication rates from a few percent to well over a third of AI-suggested citations, depending on the model and field.
Why this is so dangerous
Fabricated citations have already led to sanctioned lawyers, retracted papers, rejected theses, and public corrections. The failure mode is brutal: one invented reference discovered by a reviewer or opposing counsel casts doubt on everything else you wrote. And fakes survive casual checking — they are formatted perfectly, the journals are real, and the authors are real people who simply never wrote that paper.
The tell-tale signs of a hallucinated reference
- The DOI does not resolve, or resolves to a completely different paper.
- Too-perfect fit: the title restates your exact claim word-for-word.
- Plausible authors, wrong pairing: two real scholars who have never co-authored.
- Volume/page combinations that do not exist for that journal and year.
- No trace in any database: a genuine paper is nearly always indexed somewhere — Crossref, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Europe PMC, or DataCite.
The verification workflow (two minutes)
Manual checking means searching each reference in Google Scholar and following the DOI — fine for three references, painful for forty. The systematic version:
- 1. Paste your full reference list into a verifier such as RefCheck, which queries five scholarly databases (Crossref, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Europe PMC, DataCite) covering 400M+ records.
- 2. Review the flags. Verified entries show their matched record and real DOI. Unmatched entries are your suspects.

- 5. Reformat the survivors into your target style (APA, Harvard, MLA, Chicago, Vancouver, IEEE) from the verified metadata, which also removes typos in years, volumes and pages.
Using AI for literature work without the risk
The safe pattern is retrieval-first: use tools that search real databases and return real records, then let AI summarise those. The unsafe pattern is generation-first: asking a chatbot to "add references" to finished text. If you do draft with AI assistance, treat every citation it produces as unverified until proven real — and disclose AI use where your journal or institution requires it.
A note for supervisors, editors and reviewers
Reference verification is also the fastest integrity screen available: pasting a submitted bibliography through a checker takes seconds and surfaces fabricated sources instantly. It is a kinder failure point for a student to hit in supervision than in an examination — consider making a verification report part of your submission checklist.
