PsychologyReliability: Reappraisal alpha 0.79; Suppression alpha 0.733 sample items

About this scale

A 10-item measure of two emotion-regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal (changing how one thinks about a situation) and expressive suppression (inhibiting the outward expression of emotion).

Sample item(s)

“When I want to feel more positive emotion, I change the way I'm thinking about the situation (reappraisal)”
“I keep my emotions to myself (suppression)”
“I control my emotions by changing the way I think about the situation I'm in (reappraisal)”

Reliability

Reported internal consistency: Reappraisal alpha 0.79; Suppression alpha 0.73. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
