About this scale

A 26-item measure of ethical work climate organized along two dimensions: ethical criterion (egoism, benevolence, principle) and locus of analysis (individual, local, cosmopolitan), yielding nine theoretical climates and five empirical types: caring, law and code, rules, instrumental, and independence.

Sample item(s)

“In this company, people protect their own interests above all else. (instrumental)”
“What is best for everyone in the company is the major consideration here. (caring)”
“It is very important to follow the company's rules and procedures here. (rules)”

Reliability

Reported internal consistency: alphas 0.61–0.83 across nine theoretical climates. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
