Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport (PMCSQ-2)
Psychology: Cognition & EducationReliability: alphas 0.78–0.873 sample items
About this scale
A 33-item measure of perceived motivational climate created by the coach across two higher-order dimensions: task-involving (cooperative learning, effort-improvement, important role) and ego-involving (intra-team rivalry, punishment for mistakes, unequal recognition).
Sample item(s)
“The coach makes sure players improve on skills they're not good at (task)”
“Only the players with the best 'stats' get praised (ego)”
“Players feel good when they try their best (task)”
Reliability
Reported internal consistency: alphas 0.78–0.87. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
Notes
Standard sport-motivation-climate measure.
