Vancouver Index of Acculturation (VIA, Ryder, Alden & Paulhus)
Cross-culturalReliability: Heritage alpha 0.79–0.92; Mainstream alpha 0.69–0.893 sample items
About this scale
A 20-item bidimensional measure of acculturation, with 10 parallel items each for heritage culture and mainstream culture. Treats acculturation as two independent dimensions, not a single continuum.
Sample item(s)
“I often participate in my heritage cultural traditions. (heritage)”
“I often participate in mainstream cultural traditions. (mainstream)”
“I am comfortable interacting with people of the same heritage as me. (heritage)”
Reliability
Reported internal consistency: Heritage alpha 0.79–0.92; Mainstream alpha 0.69–0.89. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
Notes
Free for academic use; preferred over unidimensional acculturation measures.
