Bottom-Line Mentality (Greenbaum, Mawritz & Eissa)
LeadershipReliability: alpha 0.833 sample items
About this scale
A 4-item measure of supervisor bottom-line mentality — a one-dimensional frame of mind in which leaders focus on bottom-line outcomes to the exclusion of competing priorities such as ethics. Predicts subordinate UPB and unethical behaviour.
Sample item(s)
“My supervisor is solely concerned with meeting the bottom line.”
“My supervisor cares more about profits than employee well-being.”
“My supervisor only cares about the business of his/her subordinates.”
Reliability
Reported internal consistency: alpha 0.83. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
Notes
Strong situational antecedent of UPB; pair with abusive supervision and ethical leadership.
