Career Commitment (Blau)
HR & WorkReliability: alpha 0.84–0.873 sample items
About this scale
An 8-item measure of one's attitude towards a vocation, including a profession or occupation. Distinct from organizational commitment because it targets the career rather than the employer. Used widely in retention and protean-career research.
Sample item(s)
“If I could, I would go into a different occupation. (reverse)”
“I am disappointed that I ever entered my current occupation. (reverse)”
“I like this occupation too well to give it up.”
Reliability
Reported internal consistency: alpha 0.84–0.87. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
Notes
Carson & Bedeian (1994) extended this into the 12-item Career Commitment Measure with three subscales.
