Protean Career Attitudes (Briscoe, Hall & DeMuth)
HR & WorkReliability: Self-directed alpha 0.81; Values-driven alpha 0.692 sample items
About this scale
A 14-item measure of protean career orientation with two subscales: self-directed career management (8 items) and values-driven career attitudes (6 items). Captures the modern career ideal of being driven by personal values and self-management.
Sample item(s)
“Overall, I have a very independent, self-directed career. (self-directed)”
“What I think about what is right in my career is more important to me than what my company thinks. (values)”
Reliability
Reported internal consistency: Self-directed alpha 0.81; Values-driven alpha 0.69. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
