Standard Shiftwork Index (SSI)
HR & WorkReliability: alphas 0.66–0.92 across subscales3 sample items
About this scale
A multi-section instrument capturing shift-work characteristics, sleep, alertness, social/domestic disruption, and chronic fatigue. Foundational measure in occupational-health research on rotating-shift workers.
Sample item(s)
“After working a night shift, how often do you have difficulty sleeping?”
“How often does shift work disrupt your social life?”
“How often do you feel chronically tired?”
Reliability
Reported internal consistency: alphas 0.66–0.92 across subscales. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.
Notes
Use selected subscales when full battery is impractical.
