Voice Behavior (Van Dyne & LePine)

HR & WorkReliability: alpha 0.93–0.943 sample items

About this scale

A 6-item measure of promotive voice — the discretionary expression of constructive challenge, suggestions, and improvement-oriented ideas to people in a position to act, even when others disagree. Used extensively in proactivity and employee-voice research.

Sample item(s)

“Develops and makes recommendations concerning issues that affect this work group.”
“Speaks up and encourages others in this group to get involved in issues that affect the group.”
“Communicates his/her opinions about work issues to others in this group, even if his/her opinion is different.”

Reliability

Reported internal consistency: alpha 0.93–0.94. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.

Notes

Liang, Farh & Farh (2012) added a prohibitive-voice subscale; consider both promotive and prohibitive voice for a full picture.
