Work–Family Enrichment (Carlson, Kacmar, Wayne & Grzywacz)

HR & WorkReliability: WFE alpha 0.92; FWE alpha 0.863 sample items

About this scale

An 18-item measure of bidirectional enrichment between work and family roles, with three subscales in each direction (development, affect, capital for WFE; development, affect, efficiency for FWE). Captures the positive spillover side of the work–family interface.

Sample item(s)

“My involvement in my work helps me to gain knowledge and this helps me be a better family member. (WFE-development)”
“My involvement in my work puts me in a good mood and this helps me be a better family member. (WFE-affect)”
“My involvement in my family helps me acquire skills and this helps me be a better worker. (FWE-development)”

Reliability

Reported internal consistency: WFE alpha 0.92; FWE alpha 0.86. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.

Notes

Frequently used with Netemeyer (1996) WFC scales to study the dual-effect model of the work–family interface.
