Workplace Deviance (Bennett & Robinson)

HR & WorkReliability: Interpersonal alpha 0.78; Organizational alpha 0.813 sample items

About this scale

A 19-item measure of voluntary behaviour that violates significant organizational norms and threatens the well-being of the organization (organizational deviance, 12 items) or its members (interpersonal deviance, 7 items). Items use a 7-point frequency scale.

Sample item(s)

“Made fun of someone at work. (interpersonal)”
“Taken property from work without permission. (organizational)”
“Worked on a personal matter on the job instead of working for your employer. (organizational)”

Reliability

Reported internal consistency: Interpersonal alpha 0.78; Organizational alpha 0.81. As a rule of thumb, Cronbach’s α ≥ .70 is considered acceptable, ≥ .80 good, and ≥ .90 excellent for established measures.

Notes

Self-report deviance is sensitive to social-desirability bias; consider supervisor or peer ratings or marker-variable controls.
